The Rockefeller Institute calculates states’ balance of payments: difference between amount the federal gov spends in a state verse the amount the state pays in federal taxes. Here’s per capita balances in 2022. Blue = state received > it gives. Orange = gives > gets.
MA gives the most/capita.

Some of my favorite Greater Boston “intersections”. The old rotary at the end Rt 2 and start of both Fresh Pond and Alewife Brook Parkway was name “Suicide Cookie”. There are plenty more where these come from.
