Syncretic, cynic, dysthymic, pedantic, heretic, antinatalist, Anglo-Dutch. Loves cats, hates autocracy, hypocrisy, monarchy, religion, and poor grammar.
I'd cheer for Culture Studies, encompassing geography, history, languages, music, art, and religion. Help students to understand the world and broaden their minds, while sparking interest in topics for deeper study.

I'd have plumped for simply 'Nonce Andrew'

She was cold as ice, this one. Can't see her performance being beaten, ever.

Even if he was 'a coconut', doesn't make him wrong. Observing something that is palpably true is not in itself racist.

Of course, out of the mouth of a Reform spokesperson, you can infer a racist motive, but that's another matter.
October 28, 2025 at 9:54 AM
My Sikh friend from Birmingham calls them 'blackverts'. No denying that ad agencies over-represent minorities vs the real UK demographic, for whatever reason. But while Pochin may well be racist, the observation in itself is not racist, imho.
October 27, 2025 at 8:43 PM
I'm sure more (reliable) stats will soon be forthcoming as journalists are tasked to watch ads and keep score, rather than fwd through them. However, in my experience of the past few years, I don't feel she is statistically wrong, whatever the intention behind what she said.
October 27, 2025 at 6:58 PM
Get your point, but advertising is more simplistic than that. She expressed irritation at 'too many', as in, not reflective of the real world. Is she a racist? Probably. But is an observation (which I share) in itself racist? Of course not.

Quite possible that different areas and different times of day means different content, but as mostly an evening viewer in the south-east, I'd say my impression isn't far off, though I don't keep a notepad next to the sofa... No doubt more stats will be forthcoming soon.
October 27, 2025 at 3:45 PM
Of course ads are in a different category. I agree with you that Reform (etc) are all about putting down the categories you mention. But while this woman's "irritation" may be founded in racism and suchlike, the observation in itself isn't racist.
October 27, 2025 at 3:40 PM
I get that, of course. As I said, every ad is pored over by ad agencies and their clients, so whatever we see on screen is intentional. From what I heard, it's the intentional over-representation of minorities that grates. We can disagree about it, but it's not racist to observe a fact.
October 27, 2025 at 3:35 PM
You should try watching more ads. But whether it's right or not isn't the point. Is it racist to make the observation? I'd argue 'no', as much as I despise the racist party member who said it.
October 27, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Almost exclusively it does, which is why it is so obvious. It doesn't offend me in the slightest, but neither is it racist to point out that UK TV ads don't reflect the demographic that they are aimed at.
October 27, 2025 at 3:24 PM
The real world -- the one that these ads are aimed at -- doesn't look that way.

Not arguing the rights or wrongs, but pointing out a fact cannot in itself be racist.
