I am going to have the biggest case of FOMO with #ASV2025 happening this week. I have not missed a single ASV since graduate school and I love the virology community. I am super sad I wont be able to be there. However, @laura-athelle.bsky.social and I put together an amazing satellite symposium!

I cannot believe this is the timeline we are living on. WTF is happening…. This whole situation makes me extremely sad…. So many postdocs put SO much work into these. I myself have submitted for a Hanna Gray and a Mosaic K99 and it is gut wrenching to think that is all for nothing.
Just got news that @hhmi.org decided to not review Hanna Gray fellowship applications. I am sorry but that’s fucked up. People spent months working in those. So now you disadvantaged these candidates even more. They could have used the time to advance their research instead.

To be clear, if this bill passes, it will end all scientific research & medical training in the US. It will close hospitals. It will be economically devastating. Millions will lose their jobs.

Call your representatives & tell them to vote fuck no on 15% IDC rates & the rest of this horror show.

I am looking for an expert in science communication who has experience with communicating health or health related topics and building relationships with marginalized communities. Bonus if they are well versed in zine creation.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Alright, it is official! My last day as a postdoc was yesterday! It is extremely bittersweet, I will miss my labmates and my mentors but I am so excited for my future. I will start as a senior scientific editor with the The Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative of Northern Ohio at CWRU!

There's a lot of organizations declaring "we're doing this based on legal advice about EOs" going around. As an administrator I always knew that advice is not a mandate. It takes a leader's directive to convert advice to action. Leaders need to be prepared to own that directive AND its consequences.

YES YES AND YES!
It would be nice if people could stop acting like DEI is an only a moral good.

DEI strengthens organizations. People from diverse backgrounds bring new ways of solving problems and serving people.

DEI isn’t a gift to diverse people. It’s a gift to the orgs that hire us.

My letter to ASM leaders that I sent is too long to be posted here, so I'm going to post highlights in case anyone else needs information for their letter. 🧵
@asm.org this better not be anticipatory obedience. I have 5 lab members planning on going to ASM microbe this year. I will absolutely pivot to another meeting if ASM gives in to anti-DEI efforts.
@vscooper.micropopbio.org and @mostlymicrobes.bsky.social while downloading scientist spotlights for teaching from the site; ASM has also scrubbed the entire IDEAA page including resources on LGBTQ+ scientists at asm.org/IDEAA/resources/pride-month

I could not agree more. In fact, I am transitioning out of my postdoc to an alternative academic position. For the longest time I was fighting against myself thinking that I was quitting. But no, as a scientist I we can do so much and I am excited to use my talents in other ways!
Let’s stop treating "leaving academia" as negative. Scientists train for academia, industry, or what suits them. Industry isn’t an alternative; it’s a choice. In fields like engineering, most PhDs go to industry, and no one calls it "leaving academia." We should train scientists for diverse paths.

More than 40% of postdoctoral researchers leave academia, according to a study of some 45,500 researchers’ careers

This is the time to fight misinformation. We as a scientific community can do so much.
Speaking of healthcare. Let's make @bsky.app the platform that fights misinformation. Some great follows are @drsusanoliver.bsky.social @jsm2334.bsky.social @therealtruther.bsky.social

Let's get them more followers and engagement than other platforms and let health science accounts find a home
