It doesn’t have to end like this.” “End like what, Ed?” I took his jaw between my fingers. “Like you finally staying on your side of the fence? Like you gossiping every fucking thing to the neighbours except what my husband was doing to me all those years? Watching Greg through the kitchen windows for a decade, doing what he did, and saying nothing, Ed?” Good girl, Laurel. Show him an ending he deserves. I squeezed his jaw until it cracked under my hand. The scream was delicious. It ran a chill down my spine until I was shivering with glee. The black on his lips oozed from his mouth, making its way to my hand. It was mine. A little more of my birthright, seeping its way under my skin. Becoming part of me. I let him drop. Let him scream and squeal on the ground. Not everyone ran, but most did. Billy, a friend of a cousin I’d once done a repair for, lifted his shotgun from a few metres away and fired a round. A pinprick of light drew my attention. I turned to look down the hill. In the dead of night, tiny glowing dots were rising out of the grass, one by one. Dozens and dozens. Little stars floating everywhere. A sea of fireflies. Spencer tipped his head against mine, watching with me. “It’s beautiful,” I whispered. “Thank you for this.” Spencer took another drink of the wine, shoved the cork in, and swallowed. “Anything for you.” His fingers found my shoulder, trailing his touch down my bare arm. Heat rose in my stomach. I turned to kiss him and he met me eagerly, his lips moving in long, deep caresses against mine. I ran my hand down his chest, the silk cool under my fingers. In return, his hand drifted from my waist, up to the side of my breast, his thumb testing the limits of what I would allow. My breath caught, and without giving myself time to back away, I moved to crawl on top of him. Spencer sat up to meet me, holding my hips in both hands. Kissing me like he couldn’t get enough of the taste. I suggestively licked along his lip and he met that suggestion with abandon, his tongue searching. On my knees, sitting on his lap, I felt his body reacting to mine. Stopping to breathe, I rested my forehead against his. Deliberating. “I want it all,” Spencer whispered into my mouth, stopping to nip at my bottom lip. “The decision is yours.” He pulled away, watching my eyes as his fingers walked slowly up my left thigh, threatening to creep up my dress.
