Unfortunately the sexual morality layer is deep-rooted in the Christian tradition - e.g. St Augustine. It's bizarre, given that the text itself in several places points a different way, but it is there.

I don't think it's gaining traction, so much as its become an obsession for a specific kind of "trad" Catholic. Some people really focus on it as an identifier that you're the "right kind" of Catholic, I think that's partly why the statement got made (see the below, from the intro).

One might disagree with him on that (no doubt many of my dearly beloved Thomist friends will), but this isn't just an ecumenical-terminological move by the Church.

Not celebrated today because of the Sunday, but in other years today would be the feast of the excellently named St Chad. A local saint for me: died in Lichfield, and his relics rest in the Catholic cathedral of Birmingham which bears his name.
