There are strong resonances here with Hegel's defense of the ontological proofs for God against Kant's critique. The very fact that we are aware of our limits as finite beings means that we have transcended those limits and proves our apprehension of the infinite, however mediated it may be

Esp radical is how Eriugena goes beyond the standard greek and latin neoplatonic Great Chain of Being. Though humans are situated in the middle of this chain, the fact that we can cognize the Great Chain means that the human being *transcends* our limited place within this Chain (Imago Dei moment)

Eriugena goes beyond the standard antimony that numbers are "eternal and uncreated / temporal and created" and posits that numbers both eternally dwell uncreated in the monad and at the same time are created in a "second birth" through the senses as the intellect draws them forth

"The lack of adequate attention to Marx in recent Anglo-American Hegel scholarship means that questions about the irrationality of civil society often lead to disconsolate conclusions. Regrettably, many of Hegel's finest commentators cannot go beyond his own pessimism."

"Said differently, for Hegel, the only philosophical system worthy of the name is a self-grounded one. Try to resist the aforementioned temptation of slapping the 'intellectual Icarus' label on him because of this."

This book feels like it was made specifically for me:

"The discoveries of general relativity and quantum mechanics in the 20th century provide the perfect opportunity for Hegel’s thought to become more topical than it has ever been..."
