in part 2, i define slop and describe why gen AIs are particularly well-suited for it. algorithms run the 2020s internet and elevate engagement at the cost of any other metric. AIs are capable of optimizing for the algorithm by mass-reproducing things that already generate engagement.

in part 1, i discuss why AI has become such a beloved fascist propaganda tool. because AI can only aggregate what has already been made, it creates nostalgic, conservative images by design. this is pleasing to fascists who see european-style representational art as embodying "western values."
Part 1: AI art is fascist art. An AI image of an Aryan family in Norman Rockwell-style clothing posed in front of an American flag. There are telltale signs of AI, like hands that function in strange ways. AI image of Donald Trump, dressed as George Washington, leading soldiers during the American Civil War. Why is AI art so popular with fascists? Removes the need for creativity and artists. Literal and devoid of nuance, making it a suitable machine for propaganda. Only decent at making representational, non-abstract art. Due to idea theft, upholds normative ideas of what things “should” look like. Historical photos of Hitler's "Great German Art Exhibition" and "Degenerate Art Exhibition," which opened opposite each other. AI-generated animations of a Greek statue doing a TikTok dance.
