⚒🟢 #MineralMonday Emeralds from the Franqueira Mine, Galicia, northwestern Spain.
#Emeralds are rare, valuable minerals famously used in jewellery. They are a variety of beryl (Be3Al2(SiO3)6) with trace amounts of chromium, which give them their green colour.

208 of #365Minerals 🧪⚒️

Astrophyllite:
- A rare silicate mineral
- Forms in alkali granite
- First discovered in 1844
- Its name comes from the Greek words "άστρον/astron" (star) and "φύλλον/phyllon" (leaf) because of its starburst shape #minerals

The Herefordshire Biota, a diverse assemblage of animals from the Silurian-age rocks of the UK. Among the largest animals is Thanahita, a strange relative of Hallucigenia with soft papillae lining its back.

Quetzalcoatlite:
- Named after Quetzalcoatl, an Aztec and Toltec god of the sea, due to its sea-blue colour
- Forms in the oxidised zone of tellurium-bearing hydrothermal deposits #minerals
- This below is a co-type specimen (one of the specimens used to define the species)

Was reminded of this lovely little feature I wrote on Xu Xing, who has named more dinosaurs than any other living palaeontologist.

And to think, he didn't even want to study dinosaurs but had no choice.

Have a reshare for #FossilFriday:

Xu Xing: the palaeontologist who's named the most dinosaurs
Within the world of dinosaurs Xu Xing is a globally important figure.

#Geochemistry Strontium in seawater through deep time 🧪⚒️

Strontium has several stable isotopes. One of them is Sr-87, which is formed by the radioactive decay of Rb-87, an isotope with a super long half-life of 4.92*10^10 years. Today seawater has the same Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio everywhere,

¡Hola, chavalada!

The consolation of deep time. Went to the Harvard art museum and saw this 2,500 year-old relief from Achaemenid Persepolis. Noticed the shell fragments in the limestone, tried to track down the geology & (as best I can tell) these creatures were alive over 100 million years earlier in the Cretaceous

Missoula MT, where I live, has some exquisite Eocene plant fossils! These Birch (Betula sp.) leaves were buried under a layer of volcanic ash probably near a mountain lake some 39 million years ago. There's a lot of other plants known from this locality, like Redwoods, Oaks, & Maples (among others)
