It bothers me that before they show the footage of the murder of these people, the news man never says "We are about to show footage where people were killed some viewers might find this disturbing." As they would for other disasters, so when the bile rises in my throat, because I really did […]

We are sick with a cold and missing a fun night with friends, so I demanded #boardgames
All of these are new to us! Pacts, Hits & Outs, and A Wild Venture, which we had to restart twice before the rules made sense, but we really enjoyed it! (alt text on edit)

[Boat strike discourse #USPol]

Am I missing where anyone in the news is saying out loud that the motivation to murder the survivors of the Venezuelan boat strike was that there were no drugs, no gang members? Everything this administration is doing is disappearing people, killing and deporting […]

I was teaching A Wrinkle in Time today and one of my classes thought it would be a definite hit to open an Ixchel-themed Aunt Beast Spa in NYC--you get a light soft gray fur garment, cuddles, a nap, warmth, a bath, delicious food, soothing affirmations....

We have been rewatching Midnight Diner again (the coziest of all shows) and getting painful stabs of yearning for simple Japanese food. In honor of the karaage and butter rice episodes, I had to make tofu karaage and butter rice for lunch, with a little cucumber dressed like seaweed salad.

Enjoying the #caturday posts today (as always)!

Here are my goofs—she was inexplicably trying to be near him today…not sure if to troll him, steal his spot, or try to snuggle. He was unhappy—swatted her & made lunges as if to bite her. But she was kinda unbothered! Hence the big yawn!

Due to a confluence of unfortunate circumstances, I spent Thanksgiving alone, eating leftover takeout with the cats. I had to teach Wednesday night and had a friend coming to town Friday, and my spouse was strongly urged to visit my in-laws out of town. But my friend cancelled her visit, so I'm […]

One sure proof that I have a writing deadline is that I spent a lot of time on a new recipe today: 锅盔 (guōkuī), Sichuan-style, stuffed with a crumbled tofu filling (with finely chopped garlic, scallions, ginger, and red peppers, seasoned with salt, pepper, MSG […]

We went to see Kokuhō during a late-morning showing today, with a mostly Japanese audience. The last third drags a bit, but it is very moving and beautifully made. The kabuki scenes are outrageously beautiful, and it was thrilling to be crying in a theater full of people crying […]

I wish it was possible to see Caught by the Tides without thinking, oh, you filmed a lot of exurban Chinese b-roll of your wife playing a gangster's moll for Ash is the Purest White. (Also, "exurban Chinese b-roll" perfectly defines what I am looking for on an in-flight entertainment system.) […]

I finally watched that 2020 filmed live documentary about the Beastie Boys, which was fine, but it brought up two very specific memories:

1. Attending the Hello Nasty stadium tour with my high school friend Roshan and spending hours wondering if maybe we aren't aliens/irredeemable nerds.

2 […]
