It’s real!
Excited that the paperback of #AnotherEngland is out on 20 Feb - with a new chapter on how the Labour Govt needs to offer meaningful change & tell a far more inspiring, compelling story, if it’s to see off the threat posed by the increasingly populist Right penguin.co.uk/books/453710/a…
Powerful morning of gut-punching presentations on true gravity of #climate & nature emergency from leading scientists speaking at packed #nationalemergencybriefing. Overwhelmingly clear we can only make the necessary green transition if social justice & equity are at its heart

New polling from European Movement UK shows that three quarters of people who see the economic damage of Brexit now back joining the Single Market and Customs Union to cut taxes and rebuild public services. The public knows the route to recovery, even if the Government refuses to face it.
New poll shows 75% favour joining single market to lower taxes
Of British adults who feel Brexit has been harmful to the UK, over 75% favour the UK joining the Single Market and Customs Union as a way to lower the tax burden and boost money for public services.

Brexit is the reason today’s Budget squeezes families, yet the government is still shuffling towards solutions that demand real urgency. We need far bolder steps back towards the single market if we want future budgets that lift people up rather than drain them.
Baby steps won’t fix Brexit or the Budget
There is a way to get back a much bigger slice of the money Brexit has cost us. By getting the UK back into the EU single market.

👀 So while all eyes were on the budget, Ministers just slipped out their North Sea Future Plan. While it’s good to see them stick to manifesto pledge not to grant new licenses, it’s a shame to see approval of “tiebacks” to existing fields - unnecessary concession that undermines climate messages

Why does the Chancellor have such a blind spot for anything that might tackle the excesses of the aviation industry? #Budget

Raiding the Warm Homes Plan to find the money for a one-off cut to energy bills is utterly perverse when the Plan exists precisely to insulate homes & thus keep bills lower in perpetuity- this simply isn’t serious #budget2025

Since 2011 fuel duty freeze has cost the Treasury a whopping £133bn and added to yet more climate emissions. Freezing it yet again is reckless & irresponsible #budget2025

Good to hear Rachel Reeves finally attack the 2 child benefit cap - but if Labour were so much against it, why’s it taken them so long to scrap it? And why were Labour MPs suspended for saying *exactly* the same last year? There’s no moral high ground here #budget2025

The Chancellor explicitly references the negative legacy of Brexit on the UK economy - so why is her govt so opposed to taking steps like joining the customs union or single market with all the economic benefits these would bring? #Budget2025

Hugely disappointing, with world now on track to yet more heating & chaos, & poorest hit first & hardest. This process needs radically rethinking - meantime it’s vital that the Brazil-led coalition of the willing urgently delivers on plans to leave fossil fuels in the ground #COP30

More powerful evidence of the disaster of #Brexit from @jonathanfreedland.bsky.social. If we’re to avoid yet more austerity, we need to start by rejoining the customs union & single market. Brexit was a reckless waste of money we simply can’t afford @europeanmovement.co.uk
