The Skinny's Films of 2025
From a deeply sexy vampire flick to a low-energy heist movie via tales of trauma, reunion and resistance, 2025 was a great time to be a movie fan.

Seeing posts about how the Avatar movies have "no cultural impact" is kind of funny. I mean, I personally haven't forgotten about the weird giant blue people planet movie.

for the December issue of @theskinnymag.bsky.social, I reviewed Laura Poitras' COVER-UP. While it could interrogate the interrogator more, it's still a pretty necessary look at journalistic independence for these times

This is good and the more cool people who talk like this the better.

Corporations love to think of themselves as cool taste makers and spend tons of money trying to appear that way, but they're not. It's just marketing. Works to a point, but like anything real cool can't be faked.

All authors, please check to see if you're eligible for compensation over AI theft of your work. Let's see if a claim from every author who was robbed can really ruin #GenAI - an "industry" that can't survive while paying for its raw materials is just a fraud in posh clothes.
Remember: they used thousands of academic books too! If you’re a scholar, check for your books too. This isn’t just novelists and pop writers, it’s academic books too!
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.

Banning VPNs not only compromises privacy, but it compromises safety. Being forced to use public wifi when travelling without the option of a VPN to make that safe will just lead to compromised computers. All in pursuit of the so-called "Online Safety Act", which achieves the opposite of safety.
The British government admits it is now monitoring VPNs use by UK residents. Regulator Ofcom has contracted with an AI-powered surveillance service to detect the number of citizens using VPNs to evade the Online Safety Act.

The UK tech minister has said a VPN ban is on the table.
