I think you're just interpreting it the inverse way. I'm saying that the nature of the controversy was that publishers didn't like direct image linking, Getty threatened a lawsuit, Google got scared and removed the button. That's what I'm invoking. But yeah, then users subsequently got annoyed.

Yeah.. that's what I said in my OP.. Controversy about linking directly to the image file, instead of the web page containing it. You said controversy that they make you visit the page to get the image. That is wrong. When was there ever such a controversy? That is the entire function of the search.
