An American pope needs an American popemobile. An F-150 is probably too big, but you know what would be just the right size....

The fans loved the red trim color, and sportswriter Willie McHale wrote about how he overheard a fan called it a "lovely shade of cardinal."

In 1900, the team changed their name.

And that's how Latin door hinges led to the name of the 11-time World Series championship team.

The St. Louis Brown Stockings baseball club was founded in 1875. The name shortened to the Browns in 1883, and in 1899 became the "Perfectos" and wore a red trim on their uniforms.

The Perfectos name would only last one season.

Early European settlers in North America saw a red-feathered songbird, and, noting its resemblance to the red vestments of the Roman clergy, called them Cardinals. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus gave them the formal scientific name of "Loxia cardinalis".

Each cardinal, to this day, receives a church in Rome that they are assigned to. Here's Cardinal Tobin celebrating Mass at his.

Over time, only cardinals became eligible for being elected Pope, and voting for the Pope.

When a clergyman is ordained, he is what is called "incardinated" into the diocese or order which ordained him. This comes from the Latin word "cardo", or hinge.

In the early days of the Church, many bishops, including the Bishop of Rome, were elected by the laity and clergy of the diocese. (Think of St. Ambrose, who was elected as bishop while he was still a catechumen!)

Over time, this narrowed to the clergy.

How did door hinges lead to the eleven-time World Series champions from St. Louis, and what does it have to do with the Catholic Church?

A thread.🧵

"For your penance, and it's going to be tremendous, absolutely tremendous, you’re going to say three Hail Marys, maybe the best Hail Marys anyone's ever said, believe me."

We humbly beseech You, O Lord, that Your immense mercy may grant to the most holy Roman Church a Pontiff who, ever pleasing to You by his devoted zeal for us, may be continually revered by Your people for the wholesome governance to the glory of Your name.

Fun fact: there have actually only been 22 popes with the name John. There was never a Pope John XX.
