Probably because all the new dance music was packed into a single Radio One show. It was common to hear handbaggy club music next to jungle, next to Massive Attack or Sub-Sub, or other acts riding the mainstream. Genres were less codified, the audience was less splintered.

I think around that time a lot of big DJs really started nailing a single genre and splitting the audience, which was obviously something he did when it came to that trance sound when most of the originators moved on. I miss the freewheeling nature of entertaining a club, rather than a fanbase.
