As a child I was so afraid of the Evil Dead 2 skull I'd run past it at the video store.
As an adult, I can't help but see that this skull has exceptionally kind eyes. Pleading, even? This skeleton needs help and lacks the facial muscles to express it.

Alejandro Amenábar's Tesis was my original sin when it comes to loving Spanish Cinema, and 29 years later he's at #TIFF50 with El Cautivo (The Captive). It's Big, Classical filmmaking but Amenábar is a Scheherazade worthy of this adventurous slice of Miguel de Cervantes' life.

Amid the CHRISTY press cycle being dissected at #TIFF50 I hope everyone is underlining Chad L. Coleman as Don King who, however you feel about the film, delivers a masterful performance. 1000 watt charisma, humour and menace in equal parts. Hope he gets his flowers.

Godspell documentary "You Had to Be There" at #TIFF50 is genuinely amazing. A feat of archival audio (from Martin Short!) and animation and genuine joyous love between some of Canada's most amazing performers. Not just for theatre kids. I wept.

The new restoration of Hookers on Davie (1984) is really breathtaking. An important part of Canadian documentary history, Trans history, sex work history brought back to life. Check it out on blu ray!
