Portland/Salt Lake ⚽
After watching him for RSL, no thanks

Yes, for sure not expecting millions or anything for him. But honestly after this season, he's clearly not worth $1.5 million of cap space anymore and any fee on top of that would be a bonus. It's a different question if we spend well to fill that hole though

That's all fair as an MLS-wide comparison. My point was more towards comparing him to his 2024 season and saying he took a step back

One big "if" not mentioned in the article (understandably so) is Mora has been heavily linked to a sale back to Chile. Would be a smart move to get a transfer fee by picking up the option + opening some serious cap space

Not sure the "not a 90-minute guy" is totally fair considering he played the 2nd most minutes of anyone on the team (almost double his minutes played in 2024). He was also a monster defensively which I don't think we saw in 2024. He did end the year on a downward trend, but had an amazing first 2/3

Great Timbers report and I agree with almost everything there. To nitpick a little though.. Ayala has been an absolute animal for Portland this year, and was a clear runner-up in the fan voted POTY (Surman). Not sure how he's regressed at all from previous years where he's been injured or recovering

Bar: Joxer Daly's and their amazing owner Eugene

Who cares how competitive it is if the quality keeps falling behind global standards?

Thanks for blowing up every single MLS groupchat

As an eastern conference neutral, I can promise you they've been talked about enough. Any listener that's not specifically a union fan didn't need/want to hear more about them for this specific episode, and I'm sure we'll hear more about them in episodes previewing the next round

Ok but this is Phil Neville here, so we're inevitably going back to mid block and losing 5-1
November 4, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Do you specifically mean penalties, or the run of play? San Diego obviously could've / should've won, but it never felt like Portland was out completely of it

Reminder that if we weren't paying 4 DPs, we'd be around NYRB, LAFC area. Still not great, but it feels like a pretty important asterisk. Take out Carballo who played 120 minutes total and we're even more average
October 30, 2025 at 2:48 PM
Not even Olatunji? I thought he's looked pretty good. Cruz has just been bad next to him when they play 4-2-2-2, and there was no chemistry between the two

Yeah we're cooked

Point taken. I think there's room for more improvement than you're giving them credit for, but I also acknowledge I'm viewing it with timbers colored glasses. Da Costa and Velde are Gass Theorem candidates, there's room for another DP, and Kelsy could take a step up with better support

Academy is TBD. It does seem to me we're getting slightly smarter at utilizing MLS experience depth pieces though. Kamal Miller, both GKs, Omir, Lassiter, Carballo, Rojas, Kelsy; all guys recently brought in with MLS experience. Haven't all hit, but the idea is there
October 20, 2025 at 9:41 PM
Hurtful comparison, but fair.

The roster feels like better than 8th place to me with a coach that actually gives players instructions. I think Fory has been great this year when healthy. Da Costa has shown moments but dropped off, and Kelsy doesn't get service needed to have a chance at consistency

Curious your thoughts on Portland's roster in a vacuum, and in a similar vein if you think Portland's issues are on Phil Neville or something else?
October 20, 2025 at 9:12 PM
You can go ahead and skip Portland in the Western Conference edition, we already know we're going out on Wednesday

Kelsy is over performing his xG by 1.1 while Mora is under performing his xG by 2.9 on the season

If only there was some technology that monitored the goal line
