In the small room you've dedicated to your mats and sticks, you pull out a large, full cushion and sit, body settling into the cross-legged posture like a train in its tracks. The day slides from the planes of your shoulders, down down and swirling at the angles of your scapulae, draining out and away as you bring yourself into your spine and let your eyes go slack. For a time, you yield, standing still in the chattering flow of thought as it rushes through and around you, making yourself a sieve, making the holes as large as you can, looking to catch nothing in your filter. Your lungs and your ribs expand and contract, each exhale curling around the spine where you live, standing you up straighter, more supported, cradled in breath. The flow runs its course, eases from rapids to an eddy, somewhere you can rest without being pulled downstream. Here you can stretch, swim, float. From far away, wriggling to the surface from the untold depths of the pool, something emerges. It is eel-shaped, contouring the water over its back as it moves just beneath the surface, undulating and slippery. You let it touch you, slick and fleeting against the still column of your consciousness. You do not reach for it, though you could. The eel dives, its shape no longer evident at the surface. You feel its motion still, displaced water shifting against the hidden parts of you, sketching the shape of its presence. The breath and the movement of the eel encircle you, and there is nothing. Warm, primordial blackness, a moment and it's gone. At the base of you, a process begins. This is what you came for. It is chemical, sprouting and fermenting, eating the sweetness it finds, belching out more of itself, bubbling and rising through your vertebrae, and at the top, in the wild conductive froth of your spinal fluids, a cauldron of electricity. You become a lightning rod, a battery, and far away you feel your body sigh.

I made Commodore Red labels for the party we went to last night. The bottles got whisked over to the drinks table and they were still unopened when we left. My efforts were unnoticed, but the host will have a wonderful mystery this weekend.
