i find the niche subgenre of "news that would have meant decades of bloody grinding war conducted by men in big floppy hats and now is basically just LARP stuff" very funny

It's incredible that this week the largest leftist political commentator on social media, just casually doxed the addresses of some of the most prominent Liberal influencers, and there will be zero consequences, and these same people will expect us to embrace them.

It’s exactly the same pattern. It’s anything to avoid a confrontation - especially with people who admire him. It doesn’t matter whether or not he’s personally transphobic - or antisemitic - he gives space and legitimacy to people who are. That’s not leadership.

It’s been a source of great hurt that people didn’t believe Jews over Corbyn. It hurts personally that many of my friends were inherently suspicious of what I was saying about him because I’m Jewish. However - I am very happy to see he’s not getting away with it now with trans folks. Enough.

The fact that smug “twitter and Britain, they’re not the same thing” David Cameron clip can now be used against the right is quite cathartic, ngl

Twitter is, thankfully, still not real life. Someone really should tell a number of politicians and newspaper editors, though.
Polling from @Moreincommon_ on Lucy Connolly

More than half think her sentence was too lenient or about right. Only a third that it was too harsh.

Only 18% think politicians should associate themselves her, while 51% think they should actively distance themselves from her.

We really live in a post-shame era.
Robert Jenrick joining a protest against hotels being used to house asylum seekers, as if he wasn't a home office minister during the period that use of hotels was ramped up, feels like a pretty bad mark of our ability to hold politicians to a minimum standard of reality / shame.

“Abase yourself in statements and with gifts” is visibly the right approach as a Trump hedge, but it needs to be paired with “wean yourself off US dependency so you aren’t going to have to still be doing this in 2048”.

Not the first person to make this point, but Labour have got a healthy voter base that most social democratic western European parties would kill for, and they pine for the voter base they had in the 20th century which a, doesn't exist anymore, and b, was when they lost by default
At some point Labour is going to have to deal with its base being urban, multicultural, and in many cases educated. If they solve the current graduate unemployment crisis and the dearth of entry level jobs there would be political dividends for years but the party is incapable of considering this.

I think much like Brexit ultimately people are going to have to experience the negative effects of net zero migration before they accept they exist. that seems to be the way the country is heading
This is a key table to understanding public opinion on migration. *When confronted with the real trade offs* people go for protecting the NHS and the economy over reducing migration.

The problem as per the rest of the thread is many don't believe those trade offs exist.
When presented economy vs immigration trade-offs, Britons typically opt for economic benefit over lower migration

Those who support requiring large nos of migrants to leave would pick fully staffing NHS over reducing immigration, but economic arguments hold less sway

see it's this kind of stuff that drives me up the wall when I look at a Labour press release because what the fuck do you mean Labour voters and the public by and large think this but Labour Cabinet Ministers are trying to placate fascist lynch mobs
A year on, how do Britons think the legal system has treated those who took part in the 2024 riots?

Fairly: 41%
Unfairly: 26%

By 2024 vote
Labour: 59% fairly
Lib Dem: 44%
Conservative: 44%
Reform UK: 16%

They're all somewhat correct
Broadly speaking I would say that we could identify a liberal answer (Brexit), a liberal-conservative answer (Covid), a reactionary-conservative answer (Blair), a social democratic answer (austerity), and an Old Left answer (Thatcher)

The underlying problem with having a "nuanced opinion on trans athletes" is that the status quo was already the nuanced view (typically a certain period on hormones, usually years post transition, decided on a sport by sport basis BY their awarding bodies), critics don't actually want that.
