Si, present in the soil in crystalline forms, as amorphous silica, and as monosilicic acid Si(OH), is released through the dissolution of primary minerals, with its availability regulated by adsorption and desorption processes, as well as soil pH and rhizosphere activity (A). Once absorbed by roots via the Lsi1 influx transporter in the exodermis and endodermis, its movement is redirected to the symplast due to the Casparian strip barrier, while Lsi2 actively exports Si to the apoplast of the stele for xylem loading. In the nodes, Lsi3 facilitates its redistribution among vascular bundles, and Lsi6 promotes its unloading into leaves, particularly into cells such as bundle sheath cells, where its accumulation strengthens cell structure and enhances water-use efficiency (B).

🥔 C-SPIRIT in the Field!

Researchers, with help from MSU Extension, are collecting data from 90 potato plots at MSU’s Montcalm Research Center after short heat treatments. Field teams are monitoring conditions, measuring plant responses, and collecting environmental data.

🌽 RIKEN researcher Miyo (Yamane) Fujimaki spent 2 months in at MSU, studying how ethanol treatments help maize handle drought, heat, & salinity.

Miyo also built wonderful friendships & connections across the MSU community. She’ll be back next year to keep growing this collab! 🌾
