I mean the name of mortgages has always said exactly what they are: "death contracts" (mort -> death, etc). Not saying it ought to be extended to 50 years but they were never anything but a modern way of indentured servitude masking as a "necessary evil" for housing etc.

There is always a path forward! Though options become increasingly challenging the more folks accept such changes as normal and/or succumb to apathy.
