@silicondust.com what about buying your DVB-T/T2/C HDHomeRun FLEX QUATRO (HDFX-4DT) from Italy / Europe ? .. Amazon has only ATSC version, and it seems the only vendor inside old continent, so avoiding import fees, additional taxes , shipping delays

Sharing my secret tech dream with @rmondello.com : an AppleTV with huge amount of RAM (512GB? 1TB?!) and Mx (with M=?) running a local LLM for whole family/home (family and home in their Apple meanings) and remotely accessed by Apple devices when outside

Vorrei una rendita mensile/secondo stipendio da Amazon Finanza, che investirei in una ditta che regala depuratori d'acqua, per ricavare una rendita che mi permetta di andare a curarmi i denti in Albania :-D

They recently put out a call for an expert working group (I applied!) and I’m hopeful maybe they’ll start to fix this. But the speed at which they’re pushing the ChatControl/CSAM regs makes it unlikely that they’ll wait to received feedback from those groups; maybe leadership doesn’t care.

The EU’s Chat Control proposal has been stopped, for now, thanks to opposition from Germany and Luxembourg.

But the fight isn’t over.

We’ve been opposing this dangerous attempt to weaken encryption since 2022, and the EU will likely try again.

NEW: WhatsApp has fixed a "zero-click" security flaw in its iOS and Mac apps that was being used to stealthily hack into Apple devices. Amnesty said the hacks were part of an "advanced spyware campaign."

WhatsApp tells me they sent fewer than 200 threat notifications to affected users.

The 17 y/o asked me today if I knew Europe was planning to spy on kids’ text messages and I had to correct him: no, the EU has plans to spy on *everyone’s* text messages. But I guess this means the word is getting out.

For the ninth time I’m going to repeat my personal conspiracy theory that every democracy is fighting a battle to control its Internet against foreign influence, and “age verification” is not being pushed so hard because kids, but is actually one weapon being deployed for that fight.

It seems pretty obvious to me that western governments are looking at China and other countries with monitored/sealed Internet and slowly putting the pieces in place to do the same thing for their own Internets.

My favorite thing about social media is the weird people who emerge when you’re talking about basic privacy, and accuse you of having things to hide.

Hey crazy person: *of course* I have things to hide. We all do. Being human means being embarrassed about personal stuff.

Discovered a great way to convert ePrint papers so that they're formatted for my e-reader (Kindle Paperwhite, 2025):

k2pdfopt input.pdf -w 1264 -h 1680 -dpi 300 -idpi -2 -dr 2 -o output.pdf

It's great to be finally able to read two-column papers, without messing up figures, etc.! Comparison:

A essere meno politically-correct si potrebbe considerare che, visto quello che conta il voto di maturità e visto quanta visibilità danno questi atteggiamenti nel mondo dell’apparire moderno, uno potrebbe anche essersi fatto due conti:
