Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is blooming! A food source for the remaining pollinators and a bit of brightness in the forest understory. This year's seed is currently in warm stratification until December, then will be cold stratified until March. #nativeplants

Another beautiful fall day. Smooth Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve) and Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides}

Sending off our monarchs with Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana), Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) and Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia trifida)

All of these plants are very aggressive; not a combo for urban environments. It hums with pollinators and dances with hummingbirds. #nativeplants

It's here! My favourite aster: Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides)
1. White ray flowers with pale yellow disc flowers
2. Linear leaves resemble heather
3. Tight clustered raceme.

Calico Aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum)
1. White to lavender ray flowers change with age as well as white to pink disc flowers change with pollination.
2. Very small flower
3. Sheathed leaf stalk
4. Main stems turning red with age.
5. Absolute show stopper of blooms. #nativeplants

Smooth Purple Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve)
1. Smooth stem
2. Clutching smooth leaves
3. Lavender ray flowers with yellow disc flowers
4. Sweat bees cannot resist it.

Frost Aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum)
1. Hairy Stem
2. White ray flowers with yellow disc flowers turning orange after pollination
3. Many branches with flower heads on tips.
4. Absolutely stunning bushy pollinator magnet.

New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)

*Smells like cola
*Leaves clasp the stem
*Leaves are hairy
*Located in a moist meadow
*Stem is green to purple
*Lilac to purple ray flowers

Stems are robust and remian upright without the Chelsea chop. Gorgeous 😍 #nativeplants

Blue vervain (Verbena hastata) adds a touch of purple to our very yellow and white fall blooms. Different colour variations provide different nutrients making this a magnet for bees and butterflies. #nativeplants

Tall coreopsis (Coreopsis tripteris) showing up for the first time in our restoration and seed orchard! Special thanks to the birds that planted it, I certainly didn't! The three lanceolate leaves on this one make it easy to distinguish quickly from other yellow blooming natives. #nativeplants

Spotted Jewel Weed (Impatiens capensis) prefers moist locations and can spread to form large patches: a hummingbird and bee buffet. A natural antifungal and can be used for immediate use to prevent skin reaction from poison ivy. #nativeplants

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) capsule. These are dehiscent fruits: they burst open to release the seeds. These are ready now and will be dried for ease of splitting the capsule. Requires warm and cold stratification and may take up to two years to germinate.

Milkweed Tussok Moth (Euchaetes egle). Tis the season for Tussok caterpillars, look but don't touch; they use chemical defense against predators that cause major skin irritation. Beautiful aren't they?

Scarlett Paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea) First time coming across one of these! They are hemiparasitic (they receive nutrients from a host plant) and through photosynthesis. #nativeplants

There is nothing like a little rock scramble.

Not enough attention to this little guy, Fowlers Toad (Anaxyrus fowleri). Just cruising on the sun scorched compacted garbage wasteland living its best life. Native to Ontario, will probably survive the apocalypse.
August 8, 2025 at 10:16 PM
Early Goldenrod (Solidago juncea), the harbinger of fall. It will grow in almost any soil, but needs part sun to thrive. It doesn't spread as rapidly as some of its more boorish cousins (I am looking at you Canada Goldenrod Solidago Canadensis)) #nativeplants

Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) the most heavily scented of our Monarda sp. In the second picture you can see bright purple flowers signaling to our bug friends that they have pollen for them. Once pollinated, they turn a light lavender. My favourite scent of summer. #nativeplants
July 15, 2025 at 2:33 PM
Circaea canadensis (Enchanter's Nightshade). Native to moist wooded areas in SW Ontario. The tiny hairs on the seed capsule stick to everything, spreading this dainty beauty at will. #nativeplants
July 14, 2025 at 2:23 PM
Pointed leaf tick trefoil (Hylodesmum glutinosum).

Beautiful dainty pinks in the forest understory. Differ from Desmodium canadense in leaf shape (pointed tips) and inflorescence size (fewer clusters). Hylodesmum sp. enjoy the darker understory while Desmodium sp. prefer sun. #nativeplants

Fringed Loosestrife (Lysimachia ciliata)
Nodding yellow flowers perfect for a wet area. They grow mostly via rhizome, but I have had some success seeding immediately.
July 8, 2025 at 1:50 PM
Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
Over an acre of wildflowers! 14 more to go. #nativeplants
July 2, 2025 at 1:31 PM
Four years of selective mowing and removal, seed collection and distribution, planting of woody species: worth it.
St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum
Eastern Daisy Fleabane (Erigeron annuus)
Heliopsis helianthoides (Smooth Oxeye)
Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis)
#nativeplants

Great Angelica (Angelica atropurpurea) growing at the river. While not a suggested garden plant, it is a larval host to swallowtails and is a food source for many insects and birds
