some numberwang:

if the avg S&P 500 company gave 0.15% [1] of annual revenue to the OSS it used

*even taking out the top 10 companies b/c market absurdity*

it'd be ~$250 MILLION PER COMPANY PER YEAR 😮

(1. avg annual IT/sw % for large companies is 3% revenue, so 5% of that, verrry conservative.)

A lesson learned from over a decade making general purpose software used by hundreds of millions:

People consider extreme levels of daily pain *absolutely worth enduring* for the features they care about.

They give exactly zero fucks whether their need is "in scope" in your product plan.

Mozilla Alumni starter pack, thanks @slifty.bsky.social for setting it up, already found people I didn't know were on here.

(I also found people I know I'd already followed, and somehow unfollowed, so that bug on the follows list is still around...)

the "invite a friend" badge is itself an old friend of many years at this point.

i like to imagine a lonely metric on a dashboard somewhere at Apple, tracking the longest living notification and someone looking at it right now wondering who can leave it so long, as i sit here wondering about them.

Last week I met with a local NGO to talk about their digital strategy as a new entrant to the social web. This got me thinking about the notion of "mobilizing vs organizing" and the interplay of feed-centric vs place-based means of communication in the Atmosphere.

to keep maximum browser history in Firefox, set/create about:config pref places.history.expiration.max_pages to 2147483647.

the pref does *not* sync across profiles, and apparently not all history syncs either.

Nostalgia level: 💯

(yeah this is a working music player & browser)

Basically the idea of Diffuse, chopped into custom components so you can hook it up, and style it, however you want. Here's multiple audio inputs (subsonic & aws s3) fed into some processors (search, metadata, etc) + webamp.org
