To make things simpler, we compare the three most talked-about future energy sources with different types of food: SAF is the veggie burger substitute, flying on batteries is like eating watermelons, and hydrogen as a fuel source is like popcorn.

Planes need fuel, as we need food. But like us, aviation needs to change its diet. Fossil-based jet fuel can be compared to factory-farmed beef. Both are very efficient sources of energy, but both raise environmental concerns, and greener substitutes are needed.

CO₂ emissions from aviation are bigger than we think, and still rising. If all sectors were to follow aviation’s lead, by 2050, the world would be 4ºC hotter. And keep in mind that these emissions only represent 1/3rd of aviation's total contribution to global warming. bumprints.org/carbon-emiss...

Misleading claims include:
✈️ That CO2 emissions from flying could be offset
✈️ Claiming 'SAF' can reduce CO2 emissions
✈️ Using the terms 'green', 'sustainable', or 'responsible'

Planning holiday travel?

Google Flights lets you easily sort flights by carbon emissions and a new feature called 'contrail warming potential.'

As passengers, if we all start choosing the lowest-emission flights, airlines will start competing on emissions. 💪 ✈️

Every kilo of jet fuel burned creates over three kilos of carbon emissions, so the easiest way for an airline to reduce its carbon emissions is to burn less fuel...
✈️ But airlines are burning increasingly more fossil fuel, not less. 📈⛽︎
