The ripe, sunset orange fruit taste incredibly sweet almost like a caramel flavor

This is my probably favorite fruit. Not just out of native fruits but favorite fruit in general. A ripe persimmon really is that good!

The larger fruit is what I suspect is a cultivated variety called ‘Meader’. Both taste very good but I’d say the smaller one is sweeter. The larger one is less sweet but also less astringent when slightly unripe.

The anglicized word "Persimmon" derives from Algonquin dialects: putchamin, pasiminan, or pessamin, which all means dried fruit - since the nutritious dried Persimmon is a valuable winter food source.

Check out these milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus)
nymphs on a swamp milkweed
(Asclepias incarnata)!

They eat the milkweed seeds,
using it’s toxicity for defense
and they huddle together
to look like a bunch of seeds
camouflaged from predators

Adults will overwinter
and reemerge in the spring
Burnt orange and black milkweed bug nymphs cling to the seeds of an opened swamp milkweed seed pod. The opened pod is full of seeds and the silky hairs that carry the seeds to distant lands. The bug’s orientation and color blend in well with the seeds, providing the camouflage necessary to deter potential predators. Also pictured is an unopened pod and long green leaves which are similarly shaped like an okra pod. Honorable mention: some extremely small invasive yellow aphids

SW Ohios full of pawpaws too. Shawnee Lookout, the park on the valley ridge where the Great Miami and Ohio rivers meet, is full of pawpaws, persimmon, honey locust, hickories, spicebush. Earthworks throughout and food everywhere. My favorite place to go in September

I’ve visited DC a couple times, checked out the city and some monuments

(image is from the weird white savior mural inside the Lincoln monument),

and I can honestly say that I didn’t feel safe there.

Not because of Black people,

but because I felt like I was being surveilled the entire time

I didn’t post about this because I was trying to protect the just Cincinnati residents that stuck up for themselves in the face of racist abuse because I heard how the media was covering it. Now that I know the police targeted only Black ppl and not the racist whites hate speech and initial assault…
Racist white man rolling in the street after justice was served, finally receiving accountability via the people’s elbow. Context: drunk mediocre white men starting a fight with Black people via racist words/slurs at night recently in Cincinnati. Tall white guy provoking the incident thought he could hit a Black man in the face and nothing would happen. He was wrong. Him and his old, overweight buddies were demoralized by a few ppl fighting back against the abuse. white abusers were kneeling, laying knocked out and rolling around trying to regain consciousness. The one rolling around is the one pictured and a hero went over there and in an act of joyful justice, dropped an elbow on the guy (not even hard, he was just messing around and enjoying the moment) in the street illuminated by cars headlights watching the drama unfold. Beautiful moment ruined by racist cops and legal system designed to oppress Black people and allow whites to dodge accountability for the abuse they perform on behalf of the state.

There’s a tree frog on my roof! I live within city limits surrounded by European turf grass lawns. This tiny but mighty ecosystem filled with edible/medicinal native plants is healthy enough to have upland amphibians. So encouraging and validating to see how much life this small space supports
