Yeah idk. Looking at Avatar Jumpstart there's a handful of cards that reward you for casting on opposing turns, but it's so minor, why not reinforce Blue's main theme?
I can only guess. Maybe waterbending changed late in development and this somehow wasn't updated?

The card templates here are so lovely and they let the art shine, I wonder if there's legal reasons why they couldn't do the same with the screenshots?

I prioritize card designs and mechanics that resonate with me over flavor and Avatar is been a real treat for that so far.
BUT as someone who just rewatched the show, the fact that this card has really interesting mechanics AND perfectly captures "the exiled prince returned" is just perfect.

In CMDR I run Archivist of Oghma a lot, it's very high variance but overall quite good
This is same thing but flying early, and later it's a mana sink that guarantees draw and is a huge body that can ambush and block, what the heck???
Looks like the ultimate Control finisher in 1v1 too right???

We can justify literally everything if we stretch enough
Mono Blue has never done this effect on any other card that I could find
The closest I could find was Reenact the Crime, which makes a copy from the GY -- same set
And MaRo says that one is a stretch

I think the argument is that older hybrid cards (Shadowmoor in particular) were done poorly but new hybrid cards are done right.
But I do wonder what's the deal with Jetsam? Mono Blue can mill, and can steal instants and sorceries from GYs, but any nonland card? This was printed last year.

One comment said they're going to make me a Rokiric deck made up of only multicolored hybrid cards that aren't Boros and it's both hilarious and sad, it sums up the change perfectly
