Also... I'm really happy for these actors. They clearly enjoy working with each other. And now they'll get a chance to flex a few more of their talents. Surely there will be someone who can't quite carry a tune. But I'd bet money we'll also be surprised by a few who can belt one out.

Is that going to be for everyone? No. And that's OK. Not everything has to be for everyone. Not even every episode of your favorite show. The alternative would be safe which and boring. Creativity need to take big swings, even if it's finding new ways to give new life to familiar tropes.

That's where I see the musical episode, because it is absolutely a trope. Perhaps a trope new to Star Trek, but definitely familiar to contemporary audiences. See: Buffy the Vsmpire Slayer, "Once More With Feeling." And if anyone can take this creative swing, it is certainly the writers of SNW.
