Finally, in some cases the packaging is in a form that could be processed but there is too little demand for the material it's made from to justify collecting it.

In other cases, the packaging is made of a material that could be recycled in a different form but it's too small or has a shape that can't be processed by the machinery at MRFs. This is the case with some small over-the-counter drug and beverage bottles.

These are designated "Not Yet Recyclable" unless the label is perforated for easy removal.

One prime example is labels on plastic bottles, jars, jugs or tubs that cover down the sides but are made from an incompatible kind of plastic that prevents the optical sorter from identifying the plastic resin the underlying container is made from.
