If you’re under 40 or outside the UK you may as well skip by and forget this happened. UK 70/80s magazine and primetime TV show ‘That’s Life’ presented by Esther Rantzen famously had feature on a man who claimed his dog could talk. It would say ‘sausages’ in a gruff voice. Well, what it ‘said’ was Shoshigiz. Kind of. If you really listened and pretended that’s what it sounded like. Low and behold, decades later it was all exposed as a scam and the guy was moving the dog’s voice box as it growled (presumably because some oaf was meddling with its voice box) faking a barely intelligible rendering of sausages. UK band Oasis single cover for ‘Don’t look back in anger’ It’s got Liam (oh weird, as I was typing his name they said it on the radio news. Spooky) anyway. It’s got Liam and Noel (I don’t know which is which, they don’t do the Ant & Dec thing of always being on the same side. They look suitably moody and ‘hard’ which might be confused with gormless and puzzled by normal people. There are some other pointless members of the band lurking in the back. It’s as bland a cover as you’d expect from a band who only know how to emulate others. They really are the AI of ‘indie’. I quite liked Definitely Maybe but got bored pretty soon after, and as humans, they’re both pretty ghastly.

A section of a 30cm metal ruler, from 17-22cm. Both sides show metric, inches aren’t displayed. Finally. Only took 50 years. Decimalisation happened in the UK around the time I was born. I get that a generation needed to transition away from inches and that but the fact that I had to search hard for a ruler in 2025, 50 years on, that I could use *both sides* of is ridiculous. Half of our rulers, tapes and measures are wasted on an arcane system and no one seems to think that’s weird. It is weird. Same goes for those state-side: buy rulers without cm. We’re all being played by Big-Ruler.
