Al hadn’t forgotten about the apple girl. She might turn out to be totally irrelevant but he had a feeling—there was no other word for it, despite the boss’s disparagement of such things—that it meant something. Coppers’ instinct, he supposed it could be called. He’d no idea where this intuition came from, there was no logic to it, but it was there. Loud and clear. And he wanted to follow it up. Needed to follow it up otherwise it would nag at him forever. Once he found the lass, he could satisfy himself as to her relevance or otherwise. Until then he would keep looking.

‘Wheesht, you lot.’ The room fell silent. All eyes turned towards the DI who stood in front of the blackboard. ‘We need to run through everything we know. Not that it’s much so far.’ He glared at Al Hughes as if he was solely responsible for this state of affairs. PCs Nixon and Rooney bowed their heads and shuffled their feet. Morgan noticed a young man standing in the corner of the room. Bonnie looking lad. Curly blonde hair and a baby face—though she guessed he was a couple of years older than her. Looked nervous though, from the way he kept tugging at his collar and adjusting his tie. ‘Last sighting of Herbert Booth alive was at about ten to three—’ Metcalf said. ‘Tuesday early hours—at the Top Hat Gentlemen’s Club. He was seen by one Helen Mackinnon when he stuffed a couple of pound notes into her stocking top. Aye, that’s right. The lass who bonked Lily on the head and saved our fair WPC from a fate worse than death. Or, more likely, from death itself.’

Man?’ Al emphasised each word. ‘Canna remember.’ Davie set about a more comprehensive bout of scratching—under his arms, the back of his neck, inside the grey rag that passed for a shirt. Al stopped him before his hand reached down into his trousers. At least he could confirm the tramp wasn’t wearing Mr Booth’s good suit. ‘Was there anything else in the bin? Clothes, say?’ ‘Never looked. I thowt it was chips, see? Wanted them while they were hot.’
