Further thoughts: I'm a little surprised at how credulous Michael Lewis is towards SBF's defense when the story Lewis tells is about a guy who takes a lot of risks, only focuses on his interests, plays loose with the rules, and has a record of losing a lot of money based on faulty reasoning.
Just finished "Going Infinite" and it's a good read. Pairs well with Zeke Faux's" Number Go Up." You can really tell Michael Lewis did not update any of his conceptions about SBF once the company went under and he went to jail.

I'm going to use this to pitch my pet solution to ideological balance in academia: only way to get more conservatives is to pay grad students, adjuncts, and professors better.
You get what you pay for! Not only does it fuel corruption, but even if they're not corrupt, you get people who are relatively more obsessed with the title and ego and power-tripping perks of the job because that's all they get for eating a massive pay cut compared to their other options.

Random thought: A reason for the continued liberal freakout over cancel culture, college campus stuff is that the people freaking out were, by and large, the winners/survivors of the last culture war and so couldn't imagine being considered anything other than the vanguard of liberal thought.

Only upside of our increasingly post-literate society is that no one will publish these and no one will care to read them.
When he's finally gone, there is going to be this flood of books and tell all interviews from Republicans about how hard it was to be a Republican in Washington during this time and I am going to be galatically furious about it.

Been slacking with interesting cocktails so I decided to make a Sazerac with apple cider syrup and a frozen cider cube. It's good but I think I could change the ratio to include some apple brandy or applejack.

Getting a PhD in History really only prepared me for a job in academia or being a kept man to a wealthy woman and both positions are surprisingly hard to break into.
Same thing with being a wastrel married to an heiress. I'd kill at that.

Just thinking of presidential architectural choices: When I was in Romania I toured Ceaușescu's presidential palace and I gotta say it was a good choice by the army to not let anyone in to see it after the revolution. A lot more heads would have rolled.

Good thread. A little worrying and depressing in some ways.
I've spent the last year interviewing prominent Dems, pundits, and internet culture researchers, who have all sort of been saying the same thing: It's possible we're living in a post-"cancel culture" world. Platner's favorable polling and huge IRL crowds seem to point to that being the case.
