Within Alaska, it is becoming increasingly common for Alaska Natives to prefer to be referred to using their tribal demonyms, such as ‘Iñupiaq,’ as opposed to a word they feel doesn’t accurately describe them or their culture and history.

The current and only demonym for the Natives of Alaska is the relatively simple ‘Alaskan.’ This is derived from its name, which comes from the Russian terms for peninsulas and islands.

Alaska is one of the most recent states to be admitted into the Union, coming over 30 years after the state which was most recently admitted before it. However, the history of its name extends much further back.

1. Alabama
The land we now know as Alabama was once a portion of the Mississippi Territory. Like many states below the 30th parallel, it was created to give southern states more political power. It’s name comes from the language of the tribes who originally inhabited it.
