Newer technology requires robust infrastructure - that means building out a ton of data centers for cloud tech. Not to mention intense electricity requirements and reliable access to Internet. Legacy systems are kept on premises, cheaper to buy, easier to cool and the hardware is CHEAP AF.

That’s the thing about these foreign programmers - a lot of lower income countries use these old ancient systems because they are so cheap. So there is a big need for those legacy programmers and that’s why there’s such a fresh supply of them overseas.

Not the point of my comment. My point is that there is an actual need for those H1-Bs. It’s not just about keeping labor costs low.
Should those companies invest more infrastructure and transition to newer technologies? Yes.
But it’s costly.

Everyone thinks the United States is incredibly up to date but 70% of Fortune 500 companies use these legacy languages. 40% of Banks still use COBOL. But it’s really hard to find people under 65 that actually know it. The people do know it are dead or dying.

Large banks and health insurance companies haven’t updated their systems for decades. Same for federal and state gov. Same with Fortran. Those skills are almost non-existent in the United States but if a company wants to transition it needs those skills.

I can’t believe the comments under this thread are going to make defend Trump 🤮 There is a need for tech related H1-Bs. It’s easy to find people that know C++, SQL & Java but as someone that was in charge of hiring for transition projects it’s impossible to find people that know COBOL or AS/400

I’m going to have to go without health insurance. I’m anemic. Sometimes I pass out and go to the ER and need a blood transfusion. I’ve almost died twice but I was saved. The next time I go to the ER I will likely have to file for bankruptcy which means I’ll lose my house. Fuck @schumer.senate.gov

There’s nothing to acknowledge. Oz is an idiot. Anything he said should 100% be ignored.
