It's pretty warm up here, but my sister and I have taken the ferry up the coast and it'll be a good day. Currently getting a very cute coffee:

I dream of one day posting about visiting Vancouver without feeling weird about sneaking in and out of the city without seeing my friends, because all my time is taken up with family nonsense.

(This was originally going to be a post about how much I like the SeaBus)

As thanks for double checking my IPA, please enjoy a photo of the resulting cake (I only piped the red letters, the rest was done by the much more talented bakery employees)

Slightly more commercially available is the Montreal 1642 tartan, created for Montreal's 375th anniversary (in 2017). This is what comes up when I try to Google the McGill University tartan, but it's nice! (www.standrews.qc.ca/montreal-164...; www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...)

Next the McGill University tartan, which is restricted (you can't weave it without permission from McGill) but which I can't find any image of other than the one from the tartan registry. (www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...)

First up: the Vancouver Centennial Tartan, registered in 1986. Definitely the tartan I would most like to own a sash in, if only that wouldn't require having it custom woven. (photo: www.flickr.com/photos/vanco...; www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...)

It's the first day of @wiscon.bsky.social! The all-online con starts tonight at 6pm Central with readings from @naomikritzer.bsky.social and @andreahairston.bsky.social—still lots of time to register!

A blustery coastal start to the May long weekend, which we 100% forgot was happening until we got to the dock to find that everyone else was *arriving* on the island. But we departed with a sense of accomplishment (and ~6 large bins of trash)!

Despite the many challenges of this trip, it is so great being on the Sunshine Coast again after many years.

Thanks to the cleansing power of fire, day 1 of clearing out my late stepfather's off-grid residence went more smoothly than it could have.

I was going to ask you all whether we agree yet on whether the Canadian Shift and the Californian Shift are the same change in progress, but a quick Wikipedia check suggests that we do, and it's called the low-back merger shift. So that's cool! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-Bac...

Got a new phone, please enjoy the last pics I took on old phone, the first burst of spring in Vancouver.

A couple people in the replies know this one, so here's Moon Mist in all its blue, purple, and yellowish-white glory!

I had been waiting for a good occasion to wear my new dumpster fire pin.

We might not have a cherry blossom season here, but it's worth remembering that we do get pretty spectacular fall colours.

I've decided to really pull out all the stops for Thanksgiving this year.

I used a new dip pen and new ink for my todo list today as a motivational strategy, and it was great, but I am genuinely mystified by the names of the colours in this ink series. This one is a blue/teal with red shimmer, and it's called… Ham #65? With an icon of a little monkey in a submersible??

The day draws to a close, but we successfully hung art! Look at these amazing paintings! (A commission done by www.andrejolicoeur.com)

Ordered some new masks and rapid COVID tests (no longer available free here), and the company's box art game is strong.

This week's non-traditional success in saying "no" to things was NOT buying an adorable wooden diorama kit, because I have no time for new hobbies and would just feel guilty about it sitting on the shelf, and instead buying this much smaller scale Lego sakura blossom model.

Is anyone else familiar with the symbol below, a kind of checkmark that starts with an extra leg, meaning "half correct"? I swear this was used by my teachers growing up, but internet searches are failing me.

Taking the opportunity to share a very tangentially related fact: one time in undergrad I actually played Trump: The Game (which came out 2 years after The Art of the Deal). I won by literally hiding money in my sock.

It has become a tradition in my household for everyone to get a personal Big Ass Toblerone at Christmas, so on a recent Costco run I got two. Unfortunately, I'm bad at judging scale from memory, and it turns out these, at 750g, are a bit over 2x the size of the ones we usually get (360g).
