We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

I got permission to share this, and I'm extremely grateful for that.

The Onion got this letter from one of our subscribers in Alaska. She works with dementia patients and decided to leave a copy in the car for each one.

This email made my year. Read it and you'll see what I mean. People are good.

Random work advice lol: If you have anger management issues, it doesn't matter if someone makes a mistake and your response is an extremely disproportionate blow up, YOU become the problem. I would fire you over anyone making a mistake. Mistakes are normal, someone with no self regulation ain't.

College is just AI talking to itself through humans.

There is no benefits to AI in my coffee maker, and no matter what you do, there never will be benefits to AI in my coffee maker. Hope this helps.
‘Why do I need AI in my coffee maker?’ AI-labeled products can scare away customers, study finds
Consumers are still anxious about AI and need to be convinced of its benefits, researchers say.

I don't think you can quite separate out the greedy part -- papers removing writers, editors, fact-checkers, photographers sets a path to allowing for this type of thing to occur. Greed can be active, and have active effects, but it can also have passive ones, too.
So that AI-generated “Summer Reading List” full of made up books illustrates an important fact about AI art & writing we need to wrap our heads around. Because the easy story is “greedy corporate paper replaces humans with AI slop”. But that’s not what happened here, or in a lot of similar cases.

Happy Hitler Shoots Himself In The Head day to all who celebrate. The 80th anniversary. May his ignominious end, with his body doused in petrol and burned by his last remaining loyalists, be a model for all tyrants.

The Internet of Things ended up being the internet of unsupported products.

Google is ending support for 1st & 2nd generation Nests and completely pulling out of Europe.

Imagine having to replace the thermostats in your home because of a reorg at some big tech meant it was no longer a priority.
Google is killing software support for early Nest Thermostats
No more controlling these “smart” thermostats from a phone.

One of the things about me being a writer is that I believe in genuine human connection as an unstoppable force for good. It’s a lot harder to hate someone based on nebulous ideas once you know them as people. Because that’s what good characters are first and foremost: fully-fleshed out people.
This elderly man showed up to support an anti-trans bill in my home state and then, because he had to wait hours to testify, he was stuck listening to queer folks rally against it

By the time it was his turn to speak, he'd changed his mind

Never doubt that speaking out can change hearts and minds

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.
