The greatest danger of all comes from the masses, in whom the effects of the unconscious pile up cumulatively and the reasonableness of the conscious mind is stifled...it is therefore in the highest degree desirable that a knowledge of psychology should spread so that men can understand the source of the supreme dangers that threaten them. Not by arming to the teeth, each for itself, can the nations defend themselves in the long run from the frightful catastrophes of modern war. The heaping up of arms is itself a call to war. when young, I thought nonreligious science believers had better view on reality. Now, no more religious than I ever was, & having read many brilliant scientists, philosophers, science doesn't come near reality. Religion is the only way, for now, we can grasp concepts science can't (more in alt text)
A great thinker on religion and science's futures as an integrated vision, Taillard's thinking is more relevant today than ever. Here's a passage from his work: [Tailard was]...building a philosophy that would relate the facts of religious experience to those of natural science. How necessary now more than ever to bridge these two magisterial schools of religion and science that seem at least in its fringe voices to pull further and farther apart...biblical christianity seem unable it to catch up with the exponential surges of scientific knowledge that have had the impact of a tsunami on traditional world views and especially on faith perspectives... faith seeks, needs understanding...faith has need of all the truth... the sheer acceleration, accumulation of new scientific data in these past decades has clearly overwhelmed popular christian thought and faith... our traditional god is too small for such a vastly unfolding universe... who will give evolution its god? Is the christ of the gospels capable of forming the center of our expanded universe? [Our] century is probably more religious than any other. How could this fail to be with such problems to be solved? The only trouble is that it has not yet found a god it can adore. I am a child of earth even before becoming a man of god.

20. Seeing Through the World: Jean Gebser and Integral Consciousness, Jeremy Johnson
In this book-as-review and cheat sheet of Jean Gebser's Ever-Present Origin (which I have not read but will now that I've studied this book), author Jeremy Johnson gives Gebser’s enigmatic, opaque  work its due by breaking Gebser's ideas down into digestible parts in creative, contemporary, and charming ways. Johnson puts Gebser's brilliance on full display, a thinker as groundbreaking as Jung or Taillard, by articulating his original theories of consciousness' origins and development, or "mutations", as referred in both books - for good reason.  I've listened to this audiobook at least six times since I checked it out of my library's digital resources, and I need to keep going back again and again, gaining more after each listen. Chapters 4 and 5 have especially captivated me. Time and space - as we think of it in modern ways - is an invention of our age. Modern time, says Johnson poetically, “becomes the counted beads in the hourglass which inevitably slip down to zero: the vanishing point for the dissolution of ego.”  Johnson clarifies the concepts of unperseptival, perceptival, and aperceptival consciousness for the reader through his use of familiar imagery, lest the reader become lost - and bored - in the foreign language of Gebser’s making. Johnson also thoroughly ties in the phases of human consciousness from archaic to magical to mystical to mental to - ultimately and hopefully - integral.  While not a roadmap to greater consciousness, this book is a fascinating read that makes some very misty ideas reachable to the lay reader. MY MOST RECOMMENDED BOOK OF THIS WHOLE PROJECT 😍

fitting re: today's global situation (more in alt text): the greatest danger threatening us comes from the unpredictability of the psyche's reactions...external historical conditions are only...jumping off grounds for the real dangers that threaten our lives. If we step through the door of the shadow, we discover with terror that we are objects of the unseen factors... instead of being believed in, the anxiously guarded supremacy of consciousness-which is in truth one of the secrets of human success-is questioned in the most dangerous way... it is better..to know where the danger lies. To ask the right question is already half the solution of a problem...we then know that the greatest danger threatening us comes from the unpredictability of the psyche's reactions. Discerning persons have realized for some time that external historical conditions are only occasions, jumping off grounds for the real dangers that threaten our lives. These are the present politico-social delusional systems. We should not regard them causally as necessary consequences of external conditions, but as decisions precipitated by the collective unconscious. This is a new problem. All ages before us have believed in gods in some form or another. Symbols are spirit from above... our unconscious...hides living water, spirit that has become nature and that is why it is disturbed. Heaven has become the cosmic space of the physicist and the divine imperium a fair memory of things that once were. But the heart glows and a secret interest gnaws at the roots of our being.
