Saying Texas might miss the #cfbplayoff if they lose to A&M ignores that they’ve spent the entire year in the top 10 in the college football power index, offensive FEI, defensive FEI, and scoring margin. Lose a rivalry game,on the road, at night, to a top 15 team, and now there are 12 better teams?

The one way to protect any notion of importance for conference championship games is to automatically seed the team participating teams above all non-participating teams from the same conference. There can’t be a penalty for playing in and losing the game. Otherwise, teams will be happy to skip it.
