"I developed the course to show young people that they are part of nature. My hope was that exploring the benefits humans receive from nature could serve as a gateway to appreciating the interdependencies between all living beings [...] Watching students develop their confidence and apply their learning to advocate for environmental protection fills me with pride. ![The Scholars Programme gives students from non-selective state schools and FE colleges across the UK the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher.
It helps students develop the skills and confidence to thrive in education and ultimately see that university can be a place for them.
We’ve worked with over 3,200 pupils across the North East. DfE progression data shows that the overall progression rate to HE in the North East of England is 40%, but 57% of students completing The Scholars Programme between 2016 and 2022 progressed to HE, according to HESA.
