just re-introducing myself - I'm Brigitta, a postdoctoral researcher at @ethzurich.bsky.social in atmospheric science.
I'm trying to disentangle the mysteries of mountain boundary layers with hi-res numerical models, and generally like to push NWP models towards their boundaries! 👩‍💻⛅🌄

Our newest paper is out in Weather and Climate Dynamics @egu.eu -- on changing glaciers, gravity waves, turbulence, and the usual shenanigans of the mountain boundary layer, and all of that is modelled with WRF LES! 🌬️🏔️

Investigating the influence of changing ice surfaces on gravity wave formation impacting glacier boundary layer flow with large-eddy simulations
Abstract. Mountain glaciers are located in highly complex terrain, and their local microclimate is influenced by mountain boundary layer processes and dynamically induced gravity waves. Previous obser...

The latest CO2 record from the Mauna Loa Observatory. (Thank you, NOAA!) Regular measurements, same method, since 1958. Incontrovertible. I think it's the most important geophysical record ever produced. Do you agree?

The data is in.

2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history – about 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial period.

More than 1 billion individual thermometer measurements have been condensed into a single vital number.

glad to share that our paper on the representation of clouds in the ICON model has been published in ACP! ☁️☁️ We investigated the impact of dx and the microphysics scheme on clouds and whether the underlying terrain (hilly or truly complex) has a large effect. acp.copernicus.org/articles/24/...
The impact of the mesh size and microphysics scheme on the representation of mid-level clouds in the ICON model in hilly and complex terrain
Abstract. The rise in computational power in recent years has enabled research and national weather services to conduct high-resolution simulations down to the kilometric (Δx=𝒪(1 km)) and even to hect...

I had a simple pinhole camera in my south-facing bedroom window for most of 2024, capturing a long-exposure photograph of the Sun's trajectory.

I think the result is really beautiful. It's both art and science. It's strangely poignant to see (nearly) 365 days flash by in one image.
