Any animal or plant that has ESA protection has become a lightning rod for GOP hate mongery. It isn't about the particular species being saved from extinction; it's the idea that any government would have the gall to refuse to allow them to do anything they please.
And it isn't just the Endangered Species Act; they hate all of the bedrock environmental laws enacted in the 1970s in response to things like the Santa Barbara Oil Spill, people dying from breathing big city air, and lifeless, toxic rivers literally catching fire. Anything that might cause them to have to alter their behavior or lose one cent of profit is the target of all their vitriol. And they wear "asshole" as a badge of honor.

Yesterday we lucked into perfect conditions for making photographs of Yellowstone's Old Faithful! Dark background, quartering wind, and a sunbeam blazed down and lit the geyser like it was in an art gallery. 😍

24 years ago, and so fresh in my mind. This made us all stand shoulder to shoulder as a nation, and also the world stood shoulder to shoulder with America.

Forest fires in Wyoming, Idaho, and the brimstone fire west of Yellowstone Lake have much of Yellowstone country, including the northern gate, shrouded and fog this evening.

Found some photos from Sweden 2022 when I was there for my son's wedding! This was a beautiful spot, can't recall the name.
Gorgeous location near Jönköping, Sweden. July 2022. Did I have a tripod? No, no I did not have a tripod. Still, I'm diggin' the water droplets from the cascades frozen in mid-air looking like - um, some really cool sparkly things!

I think when we blame "Them" for our troubles we have to at least accept the possibility that "We" are part of "Them."
Great leaders know that when there's a problem, whining about who's to blame doesn't fix the fucking problem. They make a plan, fix the damn thing, and move on to the next thing.

My roots are black and white photography, and I still feel that most "serious" photography happens in this space, so I've decided to stop trying to do everything well (for the moment, any way) and concentrate on black and white for a bit.

Even though Yellowstone National Park can get bitterly cold (the record low is 69 below zero Fahrenheit), American bison (Bison bison), are supremely well adapted to living in near arctic conditions. They are, after all, a descendant of the extinct ancient bison (Bison antiquus), a large herbivore that was common in North America during the late Pleistocene. When snow falls on their fur it doesn't even melt, they are so well insulated. They are wicked fast, have enormous personal space bubbles, and are always on alert for danger, as many naive tourists to Yellowstone National Park have learned!

I spent 10 days in Yosemite national Park in May 2023, the year of record snow melt and floods throughout the valley. This lake is normally a meadow with the Merced River flowing through it, but everything was flooded that spring in the river decided to take over the meadow, resulting in a beautiful reflecting pond!

I spent 10 days in Yosemite national Park in May 2023, the year of record snow melt and floods throughout the valley. One of the photos that was on my list was dogwood blossoms and the Merced River, account of my love of photographs of those subjects Ansel Adams made many years ago. Finally, on my last day there I found these right after a rainstorm had swept through the valley and was still covering the sun, providing wonderful light for this sort of photography. You can see clouds from the storm reflected in the river on the left side. The light from the sun reflecting off of the opposite valley wall is on the right.

I love the Tetons, and I particularly love table Mountain, even though she is a smaller peak, usually overshadowed by her big sisters. On this winter day, I was walking my golden retriever and trying out a new camera when I saw this. Of course I didn't have a tripod or any filters with me, so I shot this at an 80th of a second and the RAW image that resulted was terribly underexposed. I've been working trying to get a usable print out of this for a few years now and I think I'm closing in on it!
