I found this article as well, though in this case the person was not granted refugee status in Canada. She wants to appeal that decision. Part of why she was denied was because she couldn’t prove that she could not move to NYC (somewhere, the Canadian gov argued, she’d be safe as a trans person)

If trans folks come to Canada as refugees, I encourage them to bring any documentation they might have of being targeted (court documents, police records, notice of termination, medical records, etc.)

Refugees also had to prove that they would not be safe anywhere in their home country.

Anyone can claim refugee status at the border, but it’s not guaranteed that their refugee claim will be successful.

Tbh the refugee claims process is really challenging in Canada & I’m not sure how Canada will react to the new laws that are being passed in the US. I used to work with 2SLGBTQ+ refugees and they had to have been personally targeted and experienced violence to qualify for refugee status.
