It's almost like when you tax the rich in a place you get to make that place a better place and even the rich just looking out the windows of their limos at most of that place in passing prefer to think "oh, that looks nice" rather than "I must prepare my bunker for the impending apocalypse"
NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

This year's college first-years were 9 when Trump took office.

I know it's very hard for a lot of us to accept, but for an entire rising generation, TRUMPISM IS THE NORM.
Do political science profs have to explain to their students that, for most of American history, it was actually borderline unthinkable that elected officials and their spokespersons would constantly talk like trashy reality show contestants?
After calling Schumer a "Palestinian," Leavitt refers to "Gavin Newscum." So she's just ripping off her boss's smears now.

As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

Say #NoContractNoCoffee with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

It's very simple -- you see a picket line, you don't cross that picket line. Worker solidarity, bitches.

If you think I'm joking about how grim this part of the semester is, I will simply note that this is the part of the semester that the college-wide emails from the Dean of Student Affairs stop being "Dear Colleagues:" and start to begin "Dear Comrades:".

I'm officially at the Swamp of Sadness portion of the semester.

My student's email: You didn't remind us about this in class, and I don't read the schedule, so it's unfair that you expected me to do this reading!

Me: (who literally held the book up at the start of class for 3 full weeks, repeating that they needed to read the first 36 pages by the 10th) Sigh.
November 12, 2025 at 1:52 PM
At this point in the semester my particularly failing students are suddenly all trying to rules-lawyer my syllabus and policies to argue TO THE DEATH for five points that won't even come close to saving them from failure, and I'm just standing there like this --
a man is making a funny face and saying i don 't care
Alt: Tommy Lee Jones has just been told that Harrison Ford absolutely did not kill his (Ford's) wife, and Jones just says, "I don't care!" LIKE A MAN WHO IS NOT EARNING OVERTIME FOR THIS SHIT.

My student: I really want to pass this class. I am working really hard.

Me: Have you done the assigned reading for today?

My student: No.

Me: Do you own the book we are currently reading?

My student: No.

*SIGH*

This is why I trust the actions of my students and not their words.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

When Joanne's closed I was primarily worried about being able to get fabric, but it turns out that the really big problem has been getting things like thread and closures. I absolutely refuse to step into Hobby Lobby and Michael's is still primarily a craft store with terrible selection for notions.

Getting a review that clearly understands what you wrote is one of the greatest gifts for an author, and THIS review is in Kirkus! It went live on their site today, but I have to admit that I have been floating for days over this one :) Happy to share my joy.

I've taught Isabel Allende's book IN THE MIDST OF WINTER for almost seven years, and it was only today that I realized that there's a line in her acknowledgments that reads fairly innocuously, until you realize that it is actually a SUPER SAUCY comment toward her now-husband, and ALLENDE YOU MINX.

Oh my god, I might never see any posts from @stephenblackmoore.com ever again! (and if we're now requiring a CONSTRUCTIVE PURPOSE, then 90% of my posts are right out)
If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.
