This is not a tax cut but a tax shift. User fees are regressive, meaning the poorest pay the greatest portion of their income for services. While not perfect, property taxes are more progressive. This is an attack that shifts the cost burden from one end of the income spectrum to the other.

Ken Sim and ABC spend millions supporting events that working families, seniors, and students can’t afford to attend—while free events like the Celebration of Light get cut.

Then he raises fees, offloads rodent control, and jacks up parking and access fees to community centres and parks.
Today, Kareem Allam spoke with @simisara730CKNW about:

❌ The end of The Celebration of Light
❌ Rat infestations in Vancouver
❌ Ken’s budget cuts and how they hurt families.

Congratulations to @brennanbastyo.bsky.social for bringing forward the motion to secure additional funding to prevent community centre fee increases in the harmful Zero Means Zero budget.

The Park Board approved this motion the night before without support from the ABC Commissioners.
Today Council unanimously supported my amendment in today’s budget deliberations. We’ve reallocated $800,000 from the City’s existing budget to make sure Community Centre recreation fees stay at 0% increase in 2026. This means admission, passes, lessons, programs, and permits remain affordable.

Here are what your ABC Commissioners think of the amendment.

Starting with Comm. Virdi who alludes you have no plan; are not responsible; and is someone that want to Defund the Police.

Take a moment to watch this video. I like these ideas and I’d love to hear what you think in the replies.

Putting a focus on artists and food banks is long overdue. But, what will truly resonate is helping bring and retain health providers in our city.

@cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social, has Mayor Ken Sim gotten his staff to get him the answers yet? It’s been a day or two now. And honestly—why does he need someone else to do this in the first place?

Ken Sim’s “Zero Means Zero” budget is reckless austerity dressed as leadership. It guts services while hiding the real impacts.
At City Hall, not one of the seven Park Board Commissioner spoke in support because they know these cuts will damage community centres, parks, and programs across Vancouver

Listening to Ken Sim’s @cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social interview and it’s kind of surprising his team doesn’t prepare him better for this tough interviewer.

He says the police board has said no to some budget asks and the police have cut back their spending - but can’t name examples. #vanpoli

Ken didn’t answer any of Stephen Quinn’s questions. Gave non answers. Swerving transparency and accountability.

To be clear cutting $15M from parks is not an ‘investment’

Long overdue.

Food banks do essential, often invisible work supporting our neighbours. I’m grateful that the Vancouver Liberals are pushing this forward and I fully support the efforts needed to make it happen.
City Hall should get out of the way for non-profits providing essential services!
Burnaby and Surrey don’t charge food banks property taxes. Vancouver does!
The Vancouver Liberals will immediately remove all property taxes from food banks operating in the city of Vancouver.

The Park Board fought to keep our community washrooms clean and cared for. Removing change tables is disgusting, misogynistic, and a setback for families.

Parents deserve safe, accessible spaces — this decision hurts caregivers, women, and children across Vancouver.

Everyone’s property tax bill will go up this year. Ken Sim and ABC are increasing utility fees, user fees, and business permit fees. But worse, they have been cutting frontline services while spending money on back-office consultants and analysts.

The level of incompetence with the budget is historic. In all of Vancouver history no one has raised taxes more than Ken Sim in a 4 year period. What’s the reward for the taxpayer’s investment… record historic cuts.

Today on National Indigenous Veterans Day I hold deep reverence for Indigenous veterans and service members whose sacrifices too often went unrecognized.

Their courage service and leadership have shaped this country yet they were met with inequity in return.

I honour them today and every day.
