Fundraiser to support internet and electricity for MIT Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs) students in Gaza to attend free of charge.
"Support Internet and electricity for MIT SPOCs students in Gaza" the donation tally is currently at $850 out of the $50,000 goal. What is SPOCs for Gaza? MIT SPOCs (“small private online courses”) for Gaza is a student-run online academic program offering educational certificate courses to students in Gaza and displaced in Egypt. With our second session running from April to July 2025, SPOCs for Gaza hosts classes in introductory computer science, film studies, and more, provided free of charge to roughly 300 students in Gaza and 100 in Egypt. We are 100% volunteer run, from our teaching team to our support network to our administration. In addition to classes, we also assist in providing aid to Gazan students for both academic and survival needs. What will this fundraiser support? The vast majority of our students in Gaza do not have reliable access to internet or electricity, which making it extremely difficult to continue their education. To best support our students, MIT SPOCs for Gaza is raising $50000 to provide 3 months of hour-based access to internet hubs and cafes for our students in Gaza (which are a critical source of both Internet service and electricity), as well as provide internet cards, e-SIMs, and other ground-based solutions for students in locations without accessible internet hubs. At an average cost of $2.50/hour/student, you will not only directly facilitate their participation in the SPOCs program, you will help support their continued education, skill development, and career potential. Any excess funds will go towards supporting other regularly-requested student needs, including food and water, shelter, clothing, technology requests, tuition/fee support, and much more. We call on academics and tech professionals in the US, Canada, and across the world to stand in solidarity with these students and support the right to education for all!

also like those private <5 passenger cesna-type planes have fatal incidents all the time that only get reported by local news. the dc crash was pretty clearly human error (fuck the army) but the toronto plane crash seemed like legit environment issues w/ icy runway + strong crosswind.

Focus on the stuff in the smallest circle. There's plenty of it and we don't need to get distracted with "what-if"s. 2. Especially with regard to the anti-trans stuff, the line between the largest and second-largest circle is really important. The point of all this stuff is the show, the visibility, the spectacle of the scapegoating - there would be no motivation to make anti-trans moves in secret. So if something hasn't even moved into the second circle, don't waste your energy freaking out about it. 3. Once something makes it into the second circle, it's time to prepare but not time to panic. There's a lot of attrition before we get to the smallest circle. Eyes on the prize, babes. It is absolutely imperative that we stay silly no matter what. I love you very much.

the left is totally fragmented when it comes to positions on assad and the western backed rebels so i've felt pretty discombobulated as i'm learning more and following the news. but i've found caitlin johnstone's writing to be very sobering.
Looks like Assad is on his way out, likely to be replaced by a US puppet regime who will cut off supplies to Hezbollah in Lebanon. The empire notches another win. The US proxy warfare in Lebanon and Ukraine makes a lot more strategic sense now. Many pundits on my end of the commentary spectrum have been calling those proxy wars self-defeating and framing them as the desperate flailings of a dying empire which will only accelerate its demise, but now here we are watching the empire score a victory it's been chasing for years, with the western/Israeli stranglehold on the middle east growing tighter than ever. One of the many perks of being the world's dominant superpower is that it gives you the luxury of time. If one regime change operation fails, don't worry, you can just move some chess pieces around and you can take another shot at it. If a coup attempt fails in Latin America, relax, there will be other coup attempts. If your efforts to grab Syria fail, you can just smash it with sanctions and occupy its oil fields to impoverish it while overextending its military allies in proxy conflicts elsewhere and grab it later. A good kickboxer throws many combinations with the understanding that most strikes will miss or be blocked or cause minimal damage, trusting that eventually the one knockout blow will get through. No empire lasts forever, but there's no evidence that this one is going away any time in the immediate future. This ugliness could conceivably drag itself out for generations.
