I love mourning doves. They clean up beneath my hanging feeder and roost on the lower branches of the pine tree outside my home office window. Once there gets to be a dozen or so, the hawk shows up and picks one off, and they vacate. A smaller number return in a few days. Circle of life continues.

Sounds like your doves are as clumsy and slow to react as the ones in my yard.
