Took the picture inside the Basilica before the Holy Father’s Mass started.

This weekend I have been at the Benedictine Monastery of the Good Shepherd near Rio Grande City giving a few conferences to the Benedictine Oblates in the Diocese. Sister Nancy OSB received the Oblates as they renewed their commitment to the Benedictine Oblate way of life.

Quite the sentence:
“Gregory of Nyssa’s apophaticism is a semantic apophaticism, but not a syntactic apophaticism, because it is the relational dimension that becomes the path to the knowledge of truth, at the created level and in the relationship with the Creator.”
-G Maspero

A brief reflection I gave to the assembled on the topic. Mostly in Spanish, intermittent English.

Caminata a favor de la vida hoy en Brownsville. Siempre caminamos con la Virgen.
This is the time to pray for and cultivate a resurrection of conscience in our communities, by helping expectant mothers who feel scared and alone, by feeding the hungry, by caring for our elderly,…

Gregory of Nyssa, Oratio 29 (De Filio), 5,7–8, quoted in Maspero’s
“The Cappadocian Reshaping of Metaphysics”

“…we leave and we are left,
in such a way that only the relations (σχέσεις) orphaned of the realities remain.”

A poignant line I’ll think about for a long while.

They are sweet dogs. They tend to fast lightly while I’m away. But make up for it when I return.

By leave of +Daniel E Garcia, Bishop of Austin, I am giving a couple of days worth of conferences to the priests of the diocese. It’s been great to see many old friends, former students. The theme of the days is “shepherding in distracting times”.
Pray for your priests.

The audio of this story is enchanting, and the written prose beautifully crafted, which is dangerous, of course, because like all enchantments, it can take you where you might not want to go.
I emerged from it unscathed.

Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady for St Francis Day.
Pilgrims from St Paul the Apostle and St Therese the Little Flower parishes in Corpus Christi were present.
I made my First Communion at St Paul’s, and grew up in that parish til I entered the seminary. I am very grateful to that community.

Juan de Ávila (Audi Filia)

Muy poco aprovecha que suene la voz de la verdad divina en lo de fuera, si no hay orejas que la quieran oír en lo de dentro.

“It is little help that the voice of divine truth sounds outside of us, if there are no ears that want to hear on the inside.”

Mística Rosa de intocados pétalos,
límpido cielo de infinitas lámparas,
Musa celeste del Amor-Artífice,
alba del alba.

Como después del angustiado vuelo
el trino posa en la mecida rama,
regreso a ti - mi resplandor en ruinas -:
tú eres mi casa.

Diocesan Catechetical Convocation at the McAllen Convention Center today.
We witness to Hope when we live and serve out of the generous goodness of Christ given to us in the Spirit; when we care for the hurting ones, not just when it is convenient, but especially when it is not.

Today at the Catholic Extension Mission Bishops Conference, Dr Mario Garcia from the Columbia School of Journalism spoke to us about AI.
We had a test run on asking the machine a question. I deliberately asked a qualitative question:
“Is St Leo the Great’s Latin rhetoric…
