Perceptions are affected by interpersonal trust levels, with individual carelessness most frequently cited by those with moderate trust levels, while acts of terrorism and rent-seeking purposes were mostly reported by those who have high trust and low or no trust, respectively.

Perceptions are affected by interpersonal trust levels, with individual carelessness most frequently cited by those with moderate trust levels, while acts of terrorism and rent-seeking purposes were mostly reported by those who have high trust and low or no trust, respectively.
The choice of political party plays a significant role in attributing causes to wildfires. Voters of AKP were the least likely to report motives related to rent-seeking, whereas constituents of the DEM party were the least inclined to attribute wildfires to acts of terrorism.

Although the majority of men and women perceive individual carelessness as the most common cause of wildfires, women are more prone to attributing them to acts of terrorism than men, whereas men tend to link them to rent-seeking purposes more than women.

Our report highlights that understanding public perceptions of wildfires necessitates not only examining environmental awareness and knowledge but also social and political factors that influence the perception of disasters.

Our report highlights that understanding public perceptions of wildfires necessitates not only examining environmental awareness and knowledge but also social and political factors that influence the perception of disasters.
Using the Turkish Social Values Survey 2024 (TSVS), we explore people’s perceptions of the most common causes for the wildfires in Turkey and how these causes differ by gender, political party choice, and interpersonal trust.
