#OnThisDay 81yrs ago my dad Phil Bottomley was part of the assault phase on Juno Beach with the King’s Liverpool Regt, 8th Bn, ‘A’ Coy led by Maj Max Morrison. They landed “under intense machine gun & mortar fire” Seriously injured at the Battle of Falaise Gap in Aug ‘44 dad died in 2016 RIP #DDay81

On this day in 1939 RN cruisers Exeter, Achilles & Ajax led by Cdre Henry Harwood intercepted the German heavy cruiser Graf Spee off the River Plate estuary, the Allied vessels forced the more heavily armed German ship to seek shelter in neutral Montevideo, later the Graf Spee (below) was scuttled
