I can only assume that what the author means, is that he thinks there are a bunch of younger people getting into D&D and "ruining it" because they saw it being played and featured on Stranger Things. Basically accusing them being bandwagon "not true" fans after seeing it on the New Popular Thing.

Easy to say that in hindsight, sure. Just remember, they had trouble marketing KIRBY in the 90s. So what possible hope did EarthBound have, realistically?
