It's harder to get funding for basic research projects than ever before in Australia.
The @arc_gov_au Discovery Projects scheme now has the lowest “success rate” ever: 16.3%.
Only 1 in 6 grants are funded.
Why? The funding available has plummeted.

Finding one erroneous minus sign in thousands of lines of code of an electromagnetic mode solver. Results looked physically plausible regardless of that sign, making feedback challenging. Took a whole month of despair.
